Smoant Battlestar Squonker Review

Smoant have entered the Squonking market with their bold and striking Battleship squonker.  However does Smoant hit the target with this or crash and burn?

Smoant over the past couple of years have really established themselves as one of the leading regulated device companies on the market.  They have recently dipped back into the pod world with the Karat as well but squonking is new ground for them.  As squonking has grew over the past 12 months as a mainstream way of vaping, it has been interesting to see a great company such as Smoant try their hand at competing.  The Battlestar Squonker is a variant on their previous regulated device that has been redesigned to provide the regulated squonking experience that bridges the gap between basic and advanced squonk devices.  Have Smoant really achieved something great here or is this simply the first step on a long road?  Before we get into that, let’s start with the details first.

About the Smoant Battlestar Squonker

The Battlestar Squonker is a dual 18650 200w regulated squonking device that comes kitted with the battlestar RDA.  The device has a back curved design that is similar in design to the original battlestar mod.  It comes with a bottom battery door hinge which reveals gold connections for the batteries with light plus/minus indicators shown also.  The device has a front square fire button with detailed screen and 2 navigation buttons / USB port underneath.  The squonking bottle is built into the back of the device and comes with a 7mil capacity and can be accessed/removed by opening the battery door and pulling the pod out.  Filling the pod is done through a bottom rubber bung similar to other pod systems which fills the pod from the bottom to the top.  On top of the device there is only room for about 25mm atomisers before overhang and there is a large gold squonking pin that allows you to pump the liquid into your RTA/RDA on top.  It has been fitted with added resistance to limit over squonking also.

The menu system is very basic and can be accessed through the fire button.  5 Clicks shuts the device off and 3 clicks activates the menu system.  Modes provided are VW/VV/DVW/Ni/Ti/SS/TCR with a multitude of ways to build upon.  Altering settings is done through the navigation button and apart from that there is no other menu options.  Holding down the two navigation buttons locks the power in place which acts as a keypad lock on similar devices.  The screen provides a multitude of different information from battery indicator, Wattage/temp/VV, Volts, Ohms, puff, seconds vaped and power mode, all filling the screen.

Battlestar Squonker Pros

The first thing that is worth noting with the Battlestar Squonker is how high quality it feels in your hand.  Instead of making a device to fit purpose, the BS feels like a great mid range mod that has been designed for squonking.  Although a redesign of their previous battlestar mod, everything seems to fit into place perfectly and even the weight of the device makes it feel heavy duty rather than a throwaway device.  The buttons are nice and clicky and the squonking pin on top feels firm and well thought out.  The 7mil capacity of the pod is quite generous and the squonking action itself is pretty easy and efficient to use.  Not at any point did it feel like I was over-squonking and more importantly there was no issues using the fill design.  The simple menu system is another great little addition as the device doesn’t need a bunch of pointless options built in. It is just tailor made to allow you to squonk simply and to your requirements.  The abundance of options designed for rebuildable coils is another lovely feature to see with Smoant clearly trying to offer something that will be fit for any type of squonking fan rather than to limit accessibility with it.  The device is just so easy to use and it won’t take you too long to figure out how to get it set just right, massive fan to be honest of the added variable wattage curve option as well as the TCR option inside.   Using the device, the chip-set feels quite accurate and there have been no misfires or issues whatsoever.

Battlestar Squonker Cons

The first thing that may not appeal to everyone will be the size and weight of the device with it feeling quite bulky and heavy to hold.  Combined with the metal finish rather than paint, it can be either a device you will love or one you can’t grow to love.  I did experience leaking from the top of the squonk pod once in all the time using it and to this day I am not sure why that was.  It certainly was not a recurring issue and perhaps it came from over-squonking or overfilling the pod slightly, so worth mentioning but not a common issue in my experience.  The next thing I didn’t particularly like, a result of the design of the device is the placement of the 510 pin on top.  There is a lot of dead space on there due to the positioning so rather than a centralised pin which would allow much bigger tanks on top it instead pushes it too far over to limit it instead.  The final thing I can really say is that there is no locking mechanism on the gold squonk lever that I found.  It means the device is not really suited to be carried around without the fear of flooding the tank/dripper on top through accidental pushes.

In the growing competitive market of Squonkers now they grow in popularity, the battlestar could well be a viable option for vapers.  From using it, it does feel really well made and as mentioned, quality which is the most important thing with devices like this.  The amount of options built into a very simple menu system will make this very easy to use, which is again going to be a massive draw for vapers.  It isn’t going to be the perfect mod for everyone sure, but if you are looking for a high quality squonking mod that is accessible and reliable then this could well be the device for you.

Smoant took the leap into the unknown with the Battlestar but they have certainly made themselves a base to establish themselves in the vast space of the squonking market.
